ARTIST STATEMENT
" Whatever
one decides to work at, one eventually discovers that the endeavor demands
something of the internal as well as the external self. In
some respects, geometrical forms may just be shapes. However, if the task
of creating each one is met by bringing my whole self into the particular
moment, individual distinction naturally asserts itself each time.
There are changes of space in my work. Figures occasionally occupy these various
spaces.
The repeated use of symbols is my tool to express ideas and
emotions. They
are a
way
for
me to
represent
relationships
and situations
metaphorically.
BIOGRAPHY
Growing up in the New York metropolitan area allowed for an early artistic imprint by way of my weekly excursions to the city’s galleries and museums. The opportunity to get up close to works to explore the colors in the brush strokes was impactful.
Painting became a central focus with my move to Seattle twenty five years ago. Working with the Seattle Women’s Caucus for Art, I served for several years as the facilitator for women artist support groups. I have also taught art to both children and adults. My work has appeared in juried shows and galleries throughout the Northwest and nationally. Among the many places that I have exhibited are: Salmagundi Club and National Arts Club in New York City; Nordic Heritage Museum; Coos Art Museum; the Washington Trade and Convention Center and Whatcom Museum. I have also had several one-person shows over the years. My work has received top awards at the national level. Some of these include Honorable Mention at the 2005 International Watermedia Show, Best of Show at the PAA National Juried Exhibition in Texas, and the Award of Excellence at the National Watermedia Exhibition in Texas. I have also received EATA’s Distinguished Service Award for the “Art as Process” show . In addition to this show, I have chaired and curated numerous shows. My work was selected for the cover of “Exhibition” magazine and I was selected as one of thirty-five artists to work at Centrum’s Irish and American artists’ residency.
My paintings are represented in over 70 private collections throughout the US and Hawaii.
